Miami (6-4) is in rebuilding mode with just one returning starter from last season. The Hurricanes have not fared well at all on the road this season, going 1-3 SU & 0-3 ATS while allowing 76.7 points/game and 47.7 percent shooting. The Texas Longhorns are clearly down this season, opening 3-2 with neutral court losses to Oregon State and NC State. This team hasn’t covered a spread yet, and they are coming off a lackluster 56-40 win over Sam Houston State while shooting 31.6 percent from the floor. This is clearly a rebuilding year for the Longhorns, who don’t return any starters from last season. North Texas has faced a tough schedule in the early going. They opened with a 81-52 home win over St. Gregory’s before going on the road for three straight losses. The Mean Green did play Texas Tech tough away from home, eventually falling 64-69. They have a 23-point loss at Mississippi State, but the Bulldogs are a better team than Texas. 2011 USC College Basketball Season Preview

Recap

USC had a mediocre season in 2010-11 having a 19-15 record and a 4th place showing in the Pac-10. In the conference tournament the Trojans made it to the semifinals, then proceeded to lose in the play-in game of the tournament to Virginia Commonwealth.

The Trojans acquired results by becoming a good defensive team. Southern Cal held their opponents to 40.9% from the floor shooting and also to 63.3 points every contest.

The departures of Nikola Vucevic and Alex Stepheson is going to be difficult to replace. Vucevic averaged more than 17 points each game and brought down more than 10 boards each night. Stepheson was the team’s second best rebounder at more than 7 per night and also contributed just under 10 points.

2011-12 Overview

Kevin O’Neill has been the Trojan head coach for two seasons and has supplied the fans teams that play hard and get better as the year goes on. This season’s team has lots of production to replace, but O’Neill does have Jio Fontan, Maurice Jones, and Garrett Jackson all back. In addition to a solid recruiting class the Trojans brought in transfers Aaron Fuller and Dewayne Dedmon.

Backcourt

USC will be strongly depending on their guard starters of Fontan and Jones. Fontan sat out fall semester last season, but returned to lead the group in assists and ended up second in points at 10.5 points each night.

Jones was third on the Trojans in points with 9.9 points every night, gave out 110 overall assists, and established the school record with 69 steals as a freshman. His achievements helped to receive a spot on the Pac-10 All-Freshman team.

Bryon Wesley is a 6’5″ freshman guard who is anticipated to help on the offensive side immediately. Alexis Moore is a different freshman who really should see time and contributes very well on the two sides sides of the court. Junior college transfer Greg Allen is usually a solid defender and can shoot well from outside.

Frontcourt

The Trojans three big men ought to be Aaron Fuller, Dewayne Dedmon, and James Blascyk. Fuller was compelled to sit out last year immediately after transferring over from Iowa. In his sophomore season in Iowa City he was honorable mention on the All-Big 10 team with just under 10 points and almost 7 boards every game.

These guys will probably be pushed in practice by a couple of transfers who can’t play this year. Ari Stewart came over from Wake Forest and Eric Wise is a transfer from UC-Irvine.
